The only lens i have tried in this category that is an exception is the canon ef 40 2.8 pancake which offers good performance. Bought the samyang 35 2.8 and sent it back after 2 weeks. The best compromise for lightness but twice as expensive is still the sony/zeiss 35 2.8.

Although there are two very good EF-S zooms (10-22 f/3.5-4.5 and 17-55 f/2.8) Canon really has not produced many EF-S primes. Their approach seems to be that EF-S users use Zooms. The cameras seem to change about every 12-18 months, the lenses last about 10-15 years, so it's worth deciding what format you are going to go with and getting a body

Though expensive, the Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM Lens is simply an outstanding lens in nearly all regards, with very impressive image quality topping the list.
